SUNGLAZE™ Breeze Cartagena Shopping Mall Canopy, Colombia

The Challenge

Cartagena is a port city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The city has a hot, tropical climate with the average monthly high temperature exceeding 310C (810F) every month of the year. In the planning of the city’s premium retail destination, the Shopping Mall "Plaza El Castillo", the city’s climate was a leading consideration.

Meeting the Design Requirements

The designers of the "El Castillo" shopping mall used principles of sustainable architecturewhich are gradually becoming common in Colombia. They put a strong emphasis on energetic efficiency, a requirement that had to be met by the roofing suppliers as well. Palramtogether with its Colombian customer Apice, proposed a skylight solution based on SUNGLAZE™ panels incorporating the SolarSmart™ Technology.

Unlike regular tintsSolarSmart™ sheets and panels admit more natural daylight while reflecting outwards the Infrared radiation that carries and generates heat. Energy saving is promoted through considerable reduction of both illumination and air conditioning costs.

The architect wanted to create a convex transparent canopy, which meant the material had to be bent in two dimensions: the width and the length. With SUNGLAZE™, this configuration is possible by cold bending the panels at the construction site. There was no need to form the panels to the desired shape during production, which would have been the case with glass panels.

Palram’s Winning Proposition

  • SUNGLAZE™ 4/800 panels were chosen for a clean, glass-like appearance. Installers at
  • the site mentioned how easy it was to install the sheets after bending them to the desired form.
  • The chosen color was Bluish Breeze, providing the top energy efficiency performance among Palram’s SolarSmart™ family of products.
  • Palram recommended to use a design detail enabling a clean and continuous skylight experience.
