The new stadium in Woldia, Ethiopia is one of the many projects of Mohammed Al Amoudi, a billionaire of mixed Saudi and Ethiopian ancestry who grew up in this town of 50,000 inhabitants. Al Amoudi decided to build in Woldia the most modern sports facility in the country, seating some 25,000 spectators. The project was handled by MIDROC, an investment company owned by Al Amoudi. Palram provided Sunpal sheets to cover the stadium. The original request was for 7,000 SQM to cover the VIP stand, but when the designers realized the benefits of a covered stadium, they decided to cover the entire project.
Highlights of Palram’s Solution
Sunpal 18 mm Solar Control was used to cover the entire oval roof, as well as inner and outer parapets. The parapets are the vertical extensions of the roof where Sunpal was used in hidden seam installation. In order to overcome the curvy parts of the oval, the installers had to cut some Sunpal sheets to a trapezoidal shape. Palram provided a special aluminum profile to glaze those parts of the roof.
In this stadium, the vertical steel beams holding the structure had to penetrate the Sunpal roof. Palram provided a special EPDM flashing and accessories to secure water tightness around the beam.
An integral part of the solution was a visit by Palram’s technical consultant, who went as far as Woldia to train the installers during the first few days of installation.
